An architect brought MAC Design in to take over a stalled luxury pool, spa, and pergola project. The remaining scope of work far exceeded the Owner’s remaining budget, creating a significant challenge to complete the design without compromising quality or compliance.
We immediately reviewed the existing plans to identify cost-saving opportunities while maintaining the project’s luxury appeal. Time was critical, so we prioritized fast, precise revisions to keep permitting on track.
During review, we uncovered multiple design flaws that required significant changes. This included:
Redesigning a large portion of the pool
Correcting impervious/pervious area calculations
Adjusting shoreline setback compliance
Despite the budget constraints, we worked closely with the Owner, explaining the necessity of certain changes to ensure the project met code and design intent.
We treated the project as if it were ours from day one, staying in close communication with the Owner to ease concerns and ensure a rapid permitting turnaround. While the redesign exceeded the original budget, the Owner was highly satisfied with the results and has already committed to using MAC Design on his next investment property—bypassing the original architect entirely.

Patsy’s, a popular downtown restaurant, needed to install a custom pizza oven in a building with 10 floors of residential units above. The urban location and mixed-use structure created significant challenges for venting, as traditional vertical exhaust paths would have been costly, disruptive, and difficult to obtain permits for.
MAC Design evaluated multiple venting strategies and identified the path of least resistance—one that minimized structural disruption while meeting all code requirements. This involved working closely with the City of Fort Lauderdale to ensure compliance and approval.
We designed a system that vented to the front of the building, concealing the exterior ductwork to match the existing façade seamlessly. Inside, the vent was partially exposed to complement the industrial aesthetic of the pizza oven’s exposed steel.
The solution preserved the building’s exterior character, enhanced the restaurant’s interior design, and eliminated the need for costly multi-floor ducting. Patsy’s now operates its custom oven efficiently, with a design that is both functional and visually integrated.

A residential pergola built seven years ago received a code violation due to structural compliance issues. The homeowner needed a solution that met current standards without extensive demolition of the existing patio.
MAC Design collaborated closely with the original builder to redesign the engineering plans while minimizing damage to the existing structure. Our goal was to restore compliance while preserving as much of the patio as possible.
We strategically added small structural stakes, drilled through the existing footers, to provide additional uplift support. This approach reinforced the pergola’s integrity without requiring full reconstruction.
The project passed inspections with minimal paver disruption. The inspector commended MAC Design for thorough due diligence and ensuring the structure’s safety — not simply signing off on outdated plans.
